You, Tobias

This story might require a little introduction before one can attempt to understand it. Don’t worry, I am not trying to offend your intellect; if you rather read it first and then come back, be my guest. It is just that this text was written in a different format for a reason. The premisses that inspired me to write the piece below are twofold. Firstly, as soon as I started studying creative writing, it became apparent that writing in the second person is not very popular, nor very easy — as I can now personally testify. Secondly, one day I wondered what the monologue of a guardian angel would sound like, given that one can’t actually hear them (except for a lucky few). This thought emerged right after a truck almost ran over my car on the highway — yes, I am fine —, and I wondered how utterly annoyed my guardian angel would be at me then, an inattentive daydreamer.

The combination of both ideas felt inspirational enough that I started dictating to my phone right away — making me eligible once again for near-death experiences. After lots of rearrangements and polishing, the short story below is the product of the union of both an unpopular point of view and an angelic proposition. For those who are Christians, it will also be apparent that I used a certain book as inspiration, but for those who are not, you can read it here.

Caravaggio-style AI-generated painting of a man and his guardian angel.

“The twilight is already being consumed by the inflamed sun. It’s your time, my son. Wake up. I know you are tired. Your journey has been a heavy burden. On the other hand, remember, today is the big day!

There is no point in getting anxious. Everything will be alright. Do one thing at a time and time will thin out. How about starting by washing your face? Just be careful with the closet door that you left open last night while you were still drowsy from the long journey.

My dear! I urge you to be careful on the stairs! Do you remember when you fell as a child? Your traumatic experience should serve as a reminder. Hold on to the handrail and be prudent.

I will take advantage of your silence to say that what you’ve been thinking about Mrs. Helena is somewhat severe. It breaks my heart the way you framed her as a rejected woman in your moment of fury. Your misfortune came about due to a sequence of factors: mind you, the lady is a recent widow, and her husband’s memory still afflicts her. Even though you were right at her market and her attitude was unfair, be patient and try not to think badly of her. Oh, and don’t forget your keys!

Truly, skies are precious! The white marbling of the clouds against the light blue reminds me of my backyard. The contrast with the birds, flapping their wings, how divine! How beautiful! See the chicks in flight formation with their parents, tearing through the wind in spear formation… What is it, are you nervous?

Oh, child, asking someone to marry you is not trivial, but trust my recommendation. She will be the woman of your dreams, despite her occasional nonsense. Everyone here agrees that she is your betrothed. No wonder I approached you both… watch out for the car coming on your left! Walk on the sidewalk, Tobias! Neither she, nor her father, nor I would like to have only half of you!

Yes, I did mention her father. Why?

What is wrong with her father? He is an excellent man who only wants the best for his daughter. If he seems severe to you, it is because of all the misfortunes his daughter has been through. It is natural that he comes across as overprotective. As for what you are going to tell him, there is nothing to worry about, you will have the right words. It is essential that her smile inspires you, but never overshadows you. Concentrate and look deeply into her eyes.

Can you see her house yet? Then, the time has come. I accompanied you on the journey, but the final act is yours alone. Remember: this is an unrepeatable moment in your life. The divine will was strong enough that all things lined up for you perfectly. Do your part. Don’t overwhelm yourself in this moment, dwell in her sweet pupils and make sure you pierce her soul. You were made for this.”

“Oh Father, I come for You to fulfill Your own will. This is the moment. Despite my sins and bad thoughts, have mercy on me and guide me at this moment. Saint Raphael, pray for me. Amen.”

“I will always be with you. May God bless you, Tobias.”
